Rev. Scott EfridRev. Scott Efird

Scott grew up in Simpsonville, SC. In high school, he traveled all around the United States in competitive gymnastics. After high school, he competed for two years at The Ohio State University as a floor, vault, and still rings specialist (Go Bucks!). Then, at the old age of 20, he decided to hang up his grips and retire, transferring to Clemson University (Go Tigers!) where he earned a B.S. in Business Management. It was as a student at Clemson when he felt the call to ministry.

After graduation, Scott took several jobs while he attended Erskine Theological Seminary, in Due West, S.C. (Due west of what?). Then in 1994, as a student, he served his first appointment: Bath UMC and Clearwater UMC, in Aiken, S.C. Since then, he was served churches in Union, Waco, TX, Fountain Inn, Mauldin, Lancaster, Charleston, and now at St. Paul’s Waccamaw UMC, here on Pawleys Island.
Also, as a student at Erskine, he met and married Aimee Bigham. She has been his partner in life and in ministry for the last 22 years. They have three children: Emmaleigh, an honor student at Gardner Webb University; Elizabeth, an honor student and soccer goalie at Waccamaw High School; and Evan, an honor student and percussionist at Waccamaw Intermediate School.

God has allowed his ministry to stretch all around the world, as he loves to work in the mission field. He has served God’s people internationally in Jamaica, Peru, and Ecuador; domestically in Mississippi, Charleston, and all over South Carolina, working 30 years with Salkehatchie Summer Service.

Dr. Robert BaxterDr. Robert Baxter

As our Director of Music Ministries, Bob has been a staff member at St. Paul's Waccamaw UMC since 1993, directing an outstanding choir and overseeing the music department.

A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio, he pursued his MA. at New York University, and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Musicology from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

Bob and his wife Eva moved to Surfside Beach in 1991 after he retired from teaching high school choral music in Arlington County, Virginia. When they first came to the Myrtle Beach area, Bob took lessons in oil painting, and for several years, painted beach and ocean scenes. When he became busy with music activities, there was little time for anything else, so Eva has taken over his studio, where she works daily on her porcelain art, painting china.

Although Bob is primarily a choir director, he is also a professional singer, a bass-baritone. In recent years he has sung the bass solos from the MESSIAH with the Long Bay Symphony Chamber Ensemble and J. S. Bach's MAGNIFICAT in Wilmington, NC. He has also recorded several CD's of classical, spirituals and popular songs.

He tries to get in three to four rounds of tennis each week and is an avid workout person, getting to Healthpoint Fitness Club several times weekly.

If you are new to the area, we invite you to visit St. Paul's Waccamaw. Under the direction of Bob, the Chancel Choir participates in the 8:45 a.m. Sunday service, and the Praise Choir, a small ensemble, is part of the more casual service at 11:00 a.m.
