A Message From Your Music Director

Sunday’s music will include two new anthems presented by Chancel Choir and McKinley will sing “This is Amazing Grace”.  At rehearsal last evening we discussed how supportive Buddy was of our music programs through the changes in recent years.  Dr. Baxter fell ill, I was interim, Chuck resigned, and then I became Director of Music followed by a pandemic.

As I planned for worship I knew what to expect because Buddy follows the UMC Book of Worship.  A yearly publication offers suggestions for music and worship for each Sunday which kept us on the same page so to speak. There were a few times one of us may have incorrectly emailed a Call to Worship or yours truly chimed or played a hymn at the wrong time in worship.

Charles Estabrook, Buddy, and I recorded worship nine months every Wednesday prior to our live streaming capability. This experience was a bright spot in the pandemic as we seriously considered the worship needs of our congregation while often laughing through our stops, starts, and mistakes. As a native of a textile town, I loved Buddy’s stories of his appointments in the upstate. My favorite is the small church with Broadman hymnals in the pews because a large group of Baptists angrily left their church determined to create a Baptist congregation within this small Methodist church. Any guess to what hymnals were returned to the sanctuary by the next Sunday?

Good luck to Buddy in his retirement. Thanks for your encouragement and willingness to help this Baptist/ Presbyterian learn about Methodism and our responsibilities to our Lord and the congregation.

“The Staff Parish Relations Committee is very pleased to announce that beginning on January 1, 2020, Olivia Huggins will be named the Music Director of St. Paul’s and will permanently take over the responsibilities of directing the chancel choir, the M2P choir and band, and the bell choir, in addition to being our very talented organist. It is wonderful that she is willing to share her considerable talents and training with us as we lose Bob Baxter to retirement, and Chuck Gee as he and Carolyn prepare to move out of the area.

As you know, Olivia has been filling in for Dr. Bob during his illness. We would like you to join us in thanking Olivia for all her hard work the last two months and in congratulating her on her new position as Music Director.”

Chancel Choir – 8:45 AM Traditional Service

It is the mission of St. Paul’s Waccamaw Chancel Choir to glorify God by enhancing the Traditional Worship Service. This is being done by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through song, leading the congregation in worship and performing the finest quality of sacred music.

The Chancel Choir is conducted by  Olivia Huggins, accompanist and sings for the 8:45am service each Sunday and for special services. The choir gives two major concerts each year, assisted by a string ensemble and soloists.

The  voiced Chancel Choir consists of adults, young and old, who perform some of the world’s finest choral literature. Rehearsals are each Wednesday at 7:15 pm in the music room located in the Christian Life Center. No auditions are required but some previous choral experience would be helpful.
